"The world is a book, and those who do not travel only read one page."
-Saint Augustine
I am a 24 year old traveler, explorer, learner, teacher.
I graduated with honors with a degree in English and Secondary Education. After graduation, I headed on my first real global trip to a rural village in Tanzania for two and a half months, where I taught English in a local secondary school. This life-enlightening experience planted, watered, and grew the inevitable traveler's bug. Now, I am constantly planning my life of sightseeing.
My ride to school in Tanzania. |
“The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see.”
– G.K. Chesterton
While most people in some way probably want to see the world, my viewpoint is a bit different. I want to be a part of the world. In Tanzania, I felt like I had truly become accustomed to the lifestyle (okay, maybe not the strange bugs, but everything else!). I still keep in close contact with my Tanzanian family and pictures of the journey scatter my shelves. Now that I know how it feels to experience such cultural diversity, such hardship and reward, I don't ever want to skim the surface again. I only want to travel if I can become a part of something.
Hence, my extended journey to the City of Lights.
Well, also, who wouldn't want to spend a summer in Paris?!
